The Start of Something Big

“The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude”

– Oprah Winfrey

My dream for the last 5 years or so, like many others, has been to live on acreage with my wonderful husband and beautiful daughter, growing and producing most, if not all, of our food.

I envision a large orchard, a lush vegetable garden, loads of chickens, and maybe even a dairy cow or goats. What a beautiful life that would be!

In this current housing market and cost of living crisis though, that really is just a far, far away dream.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve tried my hand at many homesteading practices over the years.

I’ve grown my own food, dried my own herbs, I was right on that sourdough trend along with you guys through the pandemic, I have a cupboard full of canning jars, I even still have a jar of my very own jam in the pantry.

I’ve never been able to stick to it and I feel that my non-comital attitude somewhat stems from not being able to reach my large-scale goal and it has paralysed my progress.

I mean, what’s the point if I can’t attain my dream? I’ve never had the motivation to stick to the things I’ve tried.

My sourdough starter is a pile of sludge in the back of the fridge, my garden is a mess of weeds, my homegrown herb shelf is bare and my preserving jars have sat empty collecting dust for the past year.

I’ve been wanting and I’ve been dreaming, but I haven’t taken any action.

Well, I’ve made the executive decision that THAT’S ENOUGH OF THAT NONSENSE! IT’S TIME FOR A CHANGE!

That’s enough binging homesteading YouTubers and only daydreaming of what could be, it’s time to act!

I’m changing my attitude and looking at what I do have. I have a small house, I have a backyard, I even have a beautiful productive linden tree. We have around 600 square meters of land that I can do something with!

Chickens, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, beehives … there are so many possibilities if I only take a step back and look at it with a new perspective!

My dream of a large homestead with acreage may happen one day, but for now I have what I have, and for that I am learning to be grateful. We’re going to make use of what we have now.

I invite you to come along as we transform our small suburban home into the Little Linden Homestead.
